The Highway Yard Sale is a bi-annual tradition organized by the Red River Valley Tourism Association, and it turns two major corridors, US 82 and US 287, into one continuous shopping run through North Texas and southern Oklahoma. Yard sales, garage sales, sidewalk sales, farmers markets, and flea markets line the route, which reaches from New Boston in the east across to Quanah, Vernon, and Seymour in the west, with Oklahoma towns like Lawton, Duncan, and Frederick joining in on the north end.
Paris sits right in the middle of it. During the sale weekend, driveways along the highway and through town fill with tables of antiques, tools, glassware, vintage toys, and farmhouse finds, while downtown shops run sidewalk sales to draw the crowds rolling through. Most participating towns provide maps, often at a central location, so you can plan a route instead of trusting the signs.
How to do it
Start early. The best finds go in the first hours, and the weather in northeast Texas in early October is usually ideal for a morning of windshield touring. Bring cash: most sellers do not take cards. Stock the truck with water and snacks, and browse at a leisurely pace, because the route is designed to be driven, not rushed.
Spend one day on the Highway 82 stretch and another on Highway 287, or just work the dense cluster of sales around Paris and Bonham. However you run it, the weekend is as much about the scenery and small-town stops as the shopping.
It is a good weekend for the area
Weekends like this bring visitors into Lamar County and give local families a reason to be out in the community. For anyone looking at acreage around Arthur City or Paris, it is also a straight answer to the "is there anything to do" question: yes, and some of it is genuinely one of a kind. The highway sale is free, scattered over 400 miles, and always good for a story.
