The Hell of the North Texas takes its name — and its attitude — from the Paris–Roubaix, one of the most grueling one-day races in professional cycling. While the original is a 250-kilometer European classic known for its brutal cobblestone sectors, the Texas version trades cobbles for gravel, clay, and the kind of unimproved road surfaces that make Lamar County's back roads both beautiful and punishing on a bicycle.
The marquee event is a 125-mile gravel adventure that utilizes segments of the Northeast Texas Trail (NETT) along with rough rural roads throughout the region. It's organized by Spinistry, a Dallas–Fort Worth-based cycling group that specializes in endurance gravel events across Texas. The course is designed to challenge experienced riders while showcasing terrain that most people in the area only see from a truck cab.
The Northeast Texas Trail
The NETT is a paved rail-trail that stretches across Northeast Texas, passing through Paris and several surrounding communities. For the Hell of the North Texas, portions of the trail serve as connecting segments between gravel sectors — smooth stretches where riders can recover before hitting the next rough patch. The trail itself is a regional asset, part of a growing network of recreational infrastructure that makes Lamar County a destination for outdoor endurance athletes.
Why this matters for the area
Gravel cycling has exploded in popularity over the past five years, and Northeast Texas — with its mix of paved trails, gravel roads, and rolling terrain — is well-positioned to become a regional hub for the sport. Events like the Hell of the North Texas put Lamar County on the map for a growing community of riders who seek out exactly this kind of terrain. For buyers looking at acreage in the area, the cycling infrastructure adds another layer to the outdoor lifestyle pitch: you're not just buying land, you're buying access to a network of trails and roads that support year-round recreation.
The drive from 3870 County Road 45080 to the start in Paris is about 20 minutes. Close enough to toe the line on a Sunday morning, far enough to come home to quiet when the ride is done.
