Glenn Miller Orchestra with Close to You: A Carpenters Tribute in Greenville

The Glenn Miller Orchestra is one of the most recognizable names in American music history. Miller's 1940s arrangements of "In the Mood", "Moonlight Serenade", "Pennsylvania 6-5000" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo" defined the swing era, and the touring orchestra that carries the name today performs the classic book with a full big band of 18 pieces. Pair that with Close to You, a tribute to The Carpenters' soft rock catalog, and the bill covers two very different chapters of popular song in a single evening.

The room

The Greenville Municipal Auditorium on Washington Street is a restored 1930s showroom that suits this kind of program perfectly: good acoustics, a vintage feel, and comfortable reserved seating. The venue books a full season of tributes and classics, and shows like this one often draw multi-generational crowds, which is exactly the right audience for swing standards followed by Carpenters favorites like "Close to You" and "Top of the World".

Why it matters for the area

Greenville is the closest town of its size to Paris with a working historic auditorium, about 55 minutes down US-69 and I-30. For families spread across generations, a night of music both sides can sing along to is one of the easiest ways to spend a Friday evening together, and it is the kind of program that keeps the historic venue standing year after year.
